I have a laptop the runs Ubuntu 15.04. I installed my hp 8710 office jet with
no problem. The printer works just fine. I will try and do what you suggest
to confirm the status or bug 1723112.
It's been awhile since I have used terminal commands.

What's the easiest and safest way to do that? Given that the windows
partition works fine, presumably it's easiest to boot into windows and use
the Windows scandisk utility?
I've never come across this sort of problem before, because Ubuntu is
usually pretty reliable!
