I've had this issue constantly since upgrading to Ubuntu v17.04 (not a
VM). It was unusably bad. Fortunately, disabling IPv6 has been a
consistently successful workaround for me:

determined that smb.conf was named samba.conf
after issuing the corrections that @ahasenack located in step 5 the file had
been rebuilt under the wrong name by me.

A build with option #1 suggested in comment #2 is now available in a PPA
(Many thanks to mwhudson!) and is ready for test. To install :
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mwhudson/devirt
$ sudo apt-get update
Then apt-get upgrade or apt-get install docker.io containerd runc should
get the rebuilt vers
I don't think this is a compiz issue.
I'm also experiencing severe graphical glitches with this particular CPU and
I'm not using compiz.
A while ago I'd reported bug #1619556 but fell short of time to see it through.

Thanks for the hint. I disabled "ACPI S3 Hard Disk Reset" in the BIOS,
but it did not improve the situation. I also tried disabling all the
other power related settings in the BIOS, but this did not help either.
I still have to suspend to disk first in order to have suspend to RAM
working.

libvirt was more effort than we expected. OTOH we are now already on 3.5
instead of only 3.0 at this point in the cycle.
Work on 2.10-rc* will start after my PTO in ~2 weeks, there is no 2.9 anywhere
yet in Ubuntu (or Debian).
I updated the trello card I linked you in the past a while ago to
Migration to GTK+3 apparently fixed it. Should be fine in Mint 18.2
(MATE 1.18).
