True, the desktop-file isn't installed anymore. I've linked to the
Debian bugreport about the same issue, since Ubuntu takes this package
directly from Debian it makes sense to fix the issue there first.

I encountered this problem too, and like the others, installing

running Ubuntu Server 16.04.2 with the 4.8 kernel (and 4.10) fails to

Kai, I have tested the 4.12 mainline kernel. The hiss is clearly audible.
Please make suggestions how I can help you.
My earphones are Bose Soundtrue Ultra, but I guess that wont be helpful
to know.

I added the oem-audio-hda-daily-lts-xenial-dkms driver using Synapic and
enabled it with the system settings.
That helped a little
Using also the PulseAudio Volume Control I added latency to 32.00 and
that helped too.
The sound still distorts when volume increase. A low volume behaves
well.

I have this problem on my Dell XPS 15 9560 running Ubuntu 17.04. It
occurs specifically when I am moving the pointer with one finger and I
click with another finger before lifting my original finger. The only
workaround is to only have one finger on the touchpad at a time, which
is very slow-going.
