to login as root and clear system caches:

Seems to me that if NM stalls due to a race condition, then restarting NM
*is* a workaround, so yes, adding additional scripts to systemd is a
solution, but not the "answer".

After a complete reinstall but now using Xubuntu 17.04 (Zesty) I'm
seeing the same problem.
Is this a timing issue? I now hear my NAS drive burst into life,
presumably indexing the drive contents. When finished, smbc works
correctly when restarted and allows me to navigate the file system.

I had a go writing a custom interface to allow thumbnailer to access the
private files of another snap here:

Unfortunately access to ~/snap/$name is also guarded by the "owner"
modifier, so it suffers from the same problems as checking for access

James, I can give you access to a custom kernel and library that
provides a fix for the apparmor end if you would like. The issue is that
these are not in the distro yet, and have not been backported to earlier
releases (yet).
