I'm experiencing the exact same problem with my pc, which has the same APU as
you do.
As a temporary fix I've added radeon.dpm=0 as a boot parameter. This disables
dynamic power management and enables me to boot with kernel 4.8.0-34.

with the rabbit charm and looks like it's a split brain issue (/0 and /1

My 4.4.0-42 kernel which booted fine and was my workaround for months
now hangs at boot like the later versions. I also discovered that I can
boot in 42 recovery mode and I get asked the luks password at boot. I
suspect a bad interaction with something else that got updated like
possibly the nvidia

More info (sort of):
After booting today, I used SSH from another machine (successfully
logging in). Unfortunately, when the laptop froze, so did my ssh
session. The terminal was not "disconnected by host", but it was inert.
The laptop has quieted, but not completely silent. Something is whirring
