Just an update - i've left the laptop sit idle for a while and the fans
haven't turned on for the last hour or so.

due to other issues. I reran the test and it passed, so given the already

After struggling this for the better part of a week, the best solution I
have found is to abandon the Ubuntu 16.10 installers entirely and use
debian-8.6.0-amd64-i386-netinst.iso which works perfectly on a MacBook
Pro 3,1. A workable approach I believe is to do as bare-bones an
installation as poss

mvo: I notice you reuploaded to xenial (thanks), but not to yakkety. We
need both to go ahead here.
Also, if the intent is only to do the rename in snap, your fix is
incomplete. snapd will also want a Breaks/Replaces on snap (<< fixed-
version). Please make sure that lands in the packaging for
tracker was not included by default in any Ubuntu 12.04 flavor and
libseccomp is only available in backports there.
I don't intend to try to backport this change for Ubuntu 14.04 either.
Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 has only a few months of support left. I don't feel
it's worth the work to try to make these
