I've got a simular problem. After failing of the bootdisk in my raid, I
exchanged that and could first not start the system any more even with
boot-repair not. But that left me of with a kernel that was not able to
even mount the efi partition.
After all that finding and getting back on now the Mo
RD, you could use a live environment via http://releases.ubuntu.com/ to
run the command if doing a reinstall will disrupt your current OS.
