No interface. Looked in synaptic. I can't see any reference to gtk or qt

When I play music I hear it but there is no window at all, no system

Yes that was the one which was generated from the old system.
Just upgraded to 15.10 and ran a boot-repair.
It appears now that the system is at least default choosing the correct
partition to boot.
Based on this the original defect is fixed although I still have the
issue around refind.

Is there a workaround or estimate when
complete or do I need to roll back to 15.04. Is it possible to just install the
autofs from the 15.04 distro ?

I've been experiencing the exact same issue ever since scanbd replaced
scanbuttond. My scanner is fujitsu fi-6130. New Ubuntu releases and
scanbd releases have not made it go away. I just reproduced it in Ubuntu
15.10 with scanbd 1.4.1-7.
