I see exactly the same thing - I only upgraded on Friday (11-9-2015). To
successfully boot I manually select the previous kernel (-28) and then I
can enter a password.

It turns out it was another issue - the laptop was slow when using a
particular charger. I mistakenly assumed it had to do with lightdm
because when I disconnected the external screen I disconnected the
laptop charger too.

It happened again! Compiz occupied 100% of CPU for quite long, about 3-4
minutes I think. Everything was freezed, had to wait quite a bit to get back to
working desktop.
Mouse pointer was moving, but couldn't click non anything.
Cannot understand what triggers these freezes.

I don't know Raymond. I just booted from ubuntu-12.04.5-desktop-
amd64.iso, played a music file, opened alsamixer, and discovered that;
changing Master M volume independently changed the internal speaker
volume. In 14.04 Master M is muted by default, unmuting and raising the
volume has no effect.
