Some good news, the current LTS release of Ubuntu server is running the
Ubuntu/Debian distribution of mgetty just fine (info below). Mgetty now
respawns (doesn't hang) like it did with 12.04 (described above).

I can confirm this persists in Ubuntu 14.04 and vlc 2.1.4 - after
seeking, vlc may or may not play sound afterwards. Sometimes I have to
repeatedly seek again and again so that there's sound in the video.

I tried that. For kernel 3.13-35 i got a kernel panic.
I tried 3.16 and had to set the following options

is released with mercurial, and our current version doesn't work at all,
as our mercurial version is newer, see lp:1366300 . In this upload, i
would also like to add a missing depend on gnome-icon-theme-f
_DSM errors above are from kernel driver - it passes buffers or integers
to Argument #4 when ACPI spec requires it to be a package. This is an
upstream bug but it seems to be done purposely for compatibility.
Fortunately, _DSM in ASL does not use Argument #4 so there will be no
