14.04 and it does indeed now autodetect and automatically sets up the
multichannel audio outputs - running the compiled pulseaudio git binary detects

Performed an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade this week and the problem
has returned. Whatever offending package caused the return of this
issue was posted between 8/29 and 9/3.

I should also make it clear that I'm up-to-date on dist-upgrades, but
the latest dist release did not cause the problem. The problem was
introduced in a simple apt-get update/upgrade cycle since the last dist
release.

Actually, I think "Spell checking", "Auto correction", and "Word
suggestions" need to be turned off to work around the bug. Assigning
"ubuntu-keyboard" for triaging.

I can confirm that this happens with "Spell checking" turned on from the
"Language & Text" menu in "System Settings". Turning it off is a work
around.

That would explain why it's gone so long unnoticed - was driving me
nutty. Can confirm that "Spell Checking" and "Word Suggestions" cause
this behavior, however I've been unable to reproduce with "Auto
correction" turned on only. Thanks for the work around!
