Sure I can believe this is probably a case where the SIM needs to be
updated too ( as that's where ofono gets the number from ).

This no longer seems to be an issue. I have left U-S-S doing ~33 updates
on my tablet and while it takes a while doing them, it is doing them in
the background.

Some packages (e.g. gdm) use a dependency on gnome-session as shorthand
for that plus a window manager. gnome-session should Recommends: gnome-
shell. Otherwise xinit starts it, and then it aborts when gnome-shell
