FWIW: I noticed that just starting the tcsd daemon directly, with no
option whatsoever, it worked:

I ran into the same problem. Firefox and Thunderbird, once started,
turned immediately into a zombie process.
after a few inquiries I found out, that the openJDK got updated. both
mozilla applications rely on JAVA functionality to perform some tasks. I
downgraded from openJDK 7 to openJDK 6
I finaly succeeded upgrading to 14.04.
The simple solution was to deinstall 'update-manager-kde' manually before
restarting the upgrade.

what is this fixed in? I still get it with Unity 7.2.0 and xbmc 13.0.
The only solution is to switch terminals, kill xbmc, then switch back to
the lock screen, click on the indicator (which regains focus) and then
click on the password text input.

reacts on [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Del], which triggers
exec shutdown -h now "Control-Alt-Delete pressed"
without any additional checks via /etc/init/control-alt-delete.conf. An
