Confirmed on an nVidia 9600M GT using the proprietary nvidia module.
Updated to 14.04 yesterday and this is the first time I've seen this.
Switching to TTY1 and coming back replaced the big black boxes with big
smooth gradient boxes. Running

neither of them work. Well they scan but the image is Black.

After updating from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04.
I have a laptop with an Intel graphic card and a VGA monitor plugged. I
use Gnome3 but same behavior with Unity.
* lightdm dual screen perfect
* login to my session : IHM freeze, mouse flickering left/right/left/right …
and no VGA monitor
* just unpl
I'm not sure if it's the right place to mention that, but I have exactly
the same kind of problem with :
- wifi usb dongle with *ralink* rt2500usb chipset
and
- pci wifi card with *ralink* rt28xxpci
The first one has worked for me from ubuntu 08.04 till ubuntu 12.04.02
(or .03)
The second one
I can confirm, this bug is solved in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I can use my
external harddrive with no problems.

Well I haven't spelunked in the command line yet, & the happy gui
doesn't say jack squat about what failed, will cat an output later when
I feel like digging into it. So my first complaint, is why isn't the
output included in the error notification routine. grumble.
