Incredibly surprising, had to google how to stop the sound. Who new that
the volume indicator suddenly had the music player that I killed inside
it? There's exactly zero indication to what's happening, and the
perception is that somehow the player wasn't properly killed. Very bad
usability.

When launching VLC from the sound indicator applet, the QT UI theme is
wrong. The theme is correct when launched from Unity launcher or
terminal. Please see the attached screenshots.
I've tracked it down to a difference in environment in the VLC process:

Did you close the laptop lid when suspending? We're seeing a bug in
xfce4-power-manager that sounds very much like what you describe, but it
only happens when the laptop is suspended by closing the lid.
Also: does normal/manual locking also not work for you?
