Recent Ubuntu releases (in particular after 12.04) seem to have gotten
particularly suceptible to UI hangs under heavy IO load. This makes
Unity (and all other desktop systems I've tried) unusable for ~20

For the record, this hasn't fully been fixed in Quantal: Quantal's
/etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub does NOT have the container check
as introduced in precise's grub2 (1.99-21ubuntu3.9) SRU. This breaks
upgrades from quantal to saucy in containers:

On boot up/start up of Kubuntu, non-plasma plasma-nm notification pops
up and doesn't go away until you click on it.
Workaround is to disable plasma-nm notifications in network management
settings.
