PS: My laptop has a 24GB SSD (alongside a 500GB HDD), in which there was
originally two partitions (one used by Samsung ExpressCache, the other
one I guess used by Intel Rapid Start).
and... I reformated the SSD partition to install linux there when I
bought it. Lucky I kept the layout:

I lacked unity-control-center-datetime having upgraded from saucy. I do
have ubuntu-desktop installed and this does not appear to be a
dependency of ubuntu-desktop.

Interestingly I just tried apt-get install ubuntu-desktop^ and it wants
to pull in a new package...
The following NEW packages will be installed
unity-control-center-datetime

Need to get 19.8 kB of archives.

I have the same problem (I think) on gnome-settings-daemon. It's keeps aborting
and restarting, my system is unusable.
When I start it manually, I get this at the end:

That's odd. Can you also please play around with the compositor settings
and different desktop enviroments? (In particular I wonder if it fails
