I used Cinnamon on freshly installed 13.04, but now I upgraded (do-
release-upgrade) to 13.10 and my experience is similar, after login
everything works until I open menu, then desktop freeze, except mouse

the install usb). But windows is installed as non-efi, there is no EFI

"Can't mirror more than 640x480" was only a symptom of the real problem.
The real problem is that the 1280x720 option that I had been accustomed
to on my hardware is missing.
