Brightness control works fine on my Dell laptop. Could this be a
hardware problem on my new Acer Aspire (it worked fine on my
previous Acer laptop ...)?

Installing version 1.2.2 of gstreamer1.0-plugings-ugly in saucy (by
using the latest package from Trusty archive) fixes the problem on my
system
