consistentantly detect the CanoScan N670U. Sometimes it shows up as a
scanner but I have not been able to scan with it.

To me it looks like a merge is necessary. AFAIK you could just try to
build the package locally, running 'debuild' and see if the .pot file is
available after the build.

Nevermind, I don't know why I was under the impression that some users
execute X session with anything other than /bin/sh.
