I've got the same problem in Ubuntu 13.04. After login, I get a blank
screen for about a second, then it goes back to lightdm. Removing either
.ICEauthority or .Xauthority solves the problem. The problem reappears
(to me) seemingly random, so not necessarily after each successful
login.

Had the same issues with ubuntu 12.04/12.10/13.04 on my laptop.
The solution I found is to replace the kernel with the upstream kernel
3.9.0-030900-generic.
It breaks the wifi , but that was fixed by installing the driver provided by
Broadcom.

much faster since it doesn't strcmp all of the entries. Try ltrace

It seams like it's fixed in saucy. I encountered the trouble in precise
and it seams it was related to X/lightdm because of "MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE"
it contains. It often occurs at the time I shut down the computer (the
friday afternoon after five days being up or suspended).

Opening a url from activity view does not show the page

This behaviour occures when booted via "try ubuntu". When booted via
"install ubuntu" ubiquity is available also after aborting the process

several programs (like e.g. puppet) use /sbin/status to figure out
whether a service is currently running. Unfortunately, this does not
work with all services listed under /etc/init. Some fail due to missing
variables, e.g.
