I think default THREADS=5 in /etc/default/saslauthd, after these all crash [as
above] then thats the end of SASL working. (at least that is what happened for
me, repeatedly).
Setting this to THREADS=0 has worked around the issue (for me anyway) as it
makes it fork instead.

As an opinion, I believe that it would be a right thing to disable gpg-
agent functionality of gnome-keyring by default in Ubuntu, until it
implements the complete functionality. Because the way it is now, gnome-
keyring breaks the functionality of gnupg.

It's probably an issue in Compiz's configuration files.
Please try the following steps:
1) Boot Ubuntu as usual and reproduce the problem
2) Press Ctrl+Alt+F2
3) log in from the command line (enter your username and password)
4) Reset Compiz's settings by typing the following command:

It seems related to the fade effect. This also happens on the
shutdown/restart box as it fades into view. It's worse when trying to
click the Dash Home button. The computer seems to freeze for like 30

it's unmaintained status could easily lead to system corruption.
