Unfortunately the issue was due to old hardware. I believe the CPU was
faulty and it caused lot of problem with booting. Even after booting,
the system fails unexpectedly.
I upgraded my hardware recently and didn't have any problem after that.
So, we can mark this as resolved for now.

So Powerdevil in KDE is supposed to call systemd-logind now instead of UPower
if it finds it. However, it is checking for the systemd version with a call to
org.freedesktop.systemd1.Manager.VErsion and not geting a valid response. For
some reason, that method doesn't exist on my system.

That would be because that's not systemd at pid1, but our systemd-shim
which just doesn't have this me

The work around is to revert back to a previous version, as said Christopher.
In my case:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel=2:2.21.6-0ubuntu4
If you want to keep mir: "=2.21.9+xmir5870-0~saucy1"
And I removed the mir ppa:
sudo rm -i /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*mir*
sudo apt-get update;

1) After some usage, kwin freezes after login. The only way I was able to solve
this is to delete the ~/.kde/ folder, which resets all of the KDE settings.
