It seems to be a rather basic flaw in the underlying design that the
'hwmon0' sort of name used is load-order-dependent for the modules.
Can't that ordering be made alphabetical or similar so without a
hardware/configuration change it is fixed?

What I did:
I marked an unticked menu item in alacarte and clicked the checkbox to tick it.
The error also occurs when I mark it and click the 'delete' button.

I'm happy to see that this bug is fixed but you could have attached the
correct patch (read as 'valid proof'). Humbly, the figure above doesn't
reflect the global perspective of adoption of FOSS in desktop market.
Android/Chrome OS on desktops .. here in India? No way.

I am affected by this as well. I tried http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.9-rc8-raring/, and it still happened there.
My machine is a Dell XPS 12; a bit different but still has a Cypress
touchpad. For now I am working around this by blacklisting the 'psmouse'
module. I tend to use a
