GTK-2 to Raleigh and GTK-3 to Emacs the lockups go away. But I'm stuck

test -x /usr/sbin/anacron is returning a result code of 1 whether
anacron is installed or not.
I am running ubuntu 10.04 in an Amazon EC2 instance from an Ubuntu AMI.

I recently tried booting my media centre Ubuntu PC with a live 13.04 disk
(updated to release .19 of the Ubuntu 13.04 kernel). My DAC worked flawlessly.
Yet the installed version doesn't work.
What debugging steps can I do that may help work out why this is?
(yesterday I moved to the .20 kernel
It does not effect upgrades via live image. I've never tested using "do-
release-upgrade" because I run no server installs.
It does appear running upgrades via "update-manager -d", "update-manager
-d -c", and upgrades offered via GUI by the Update Manager/Software
Updater when a new version is ava

With raring all updates installed as of 8th of May 2013, ls does not work. When
a terminal is started, the message ":ls: error while loading shared libraries:

There is a fix in the latest released kernel that has fixed this for
other users. Could you please update your system and then let us know
whether you still have the problem? The fix is in updates, so a regular
update should catch it.
