Update: I realized why the files were appearing in Dash -- Dash was not
searching files, but my Shotwell library. With Shotwell library
cleared, and history cleared again, the "Don't record activity"
constraints were respected and the files in question no longer showed up
in Dash.

i haven 't had time to look further into this; my apologies. still
haven't got time, but i know that an ubuntu installation requires group
'dialout' for users, and that the relevant character devices have that
too.
so try "sudo chown root:dialout /dev/ttyS4" ...

windows where the characters were all replaced with boxes, but that went

=> A popup window appeared saying "Preparing to move N files", and it got stuck

The drivers that Broadcom release are tested against older kernels. I
tried to build the driver and ran into similar errors (even just trying
to compile the relvant bnx2x module). I would suggest trying a newer
kernel if possible to determine whether the latest driver helps or not:

I have the same problem as Lars in 12.10. I do not seem to have any
runaway processes though. usb-creator-gtk takes around 8% CPU time and
says "erasing" on the erase button but nothing happens. When checking
iotop nothing is accessing the USB-stick. "udisks --dump" is attached. I
also get the DBus

This bug has been haunting me for a couple of weeks now.
It happens only sometimes when I interact with tabs in Firefox or
Chrome/Chromium (all three tested, both stable and beta), about 3-5
times per day.
What did I do before the crash:
Interacting with tabs, creating new

sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-current

I have a query related to the FIx. Shouldn't the right fix for this bug
if one wants to use secure boot and uefi to boot their system be the
noefi boot param related fix added to linux kernels around 15th Feb i.e
commit 1de63d60cd5b0d33a812efa455d5933bf1564a51 upstre
spideryman in #Cert will help to setup remote access and also arrange
shipping one of the machine to Beijing office
