That's kind of correct. I had forgot to run
sudo update-initramfs -u
to propagate changes to the boot image. The boot somehow entered the
pretty purple 160-column mode either way, but the X driver would not
start.

If you snap off some applications from maximized state the cursor gets
positioned wrong. This is always reproduceable with Libreoffice.
If Qtcreator is in maximized state when launched the same problems shows as for
libreoffice (cursor wrong, gets placed inside the windows
