Here are two syslog snippets from the last time my machine crashed.
A lot of repeating stuff is going on at 14:11:41 (first file).

I don't know if you even used PackageKit here, but PK gives as much problems as
aptdaemon, if it is performing background tasks and you want to run another
tool which is not aware of that.
Besides that, "problems" is not very helpful ;-) Maybe file bugs if you have a
specific issue.

Yes, it does hang using that xorg.conf and the old version of xserver-
xorg-video-intel package.

just to add that I have the same problem with Elo TouchSystems 2515
IntelliTouch Plus USB Touchmonitor. When running xinput list-props
options are correctly listed, but they do not take effect.

I verified that the previous Ubuntu --as-needed patch is still needed
(it is, otherwise the package builds but "import pysvn" fails after
installation). And my additional python-multiarch-includes fixes the
current FTBFS, which I've sent upstream.

Try to use a tempdir on same partition as source files

I did now step by step what you did. No result.
But with 24-Jan-2013 Ubuntu AMD 64 Bit image and with 'nomodeset' option
(because since 12.04 live system hangs with noveau drivers and my videocard)
IMHO it doesn't matter.
