This may be too little too late, but I managed to work around the issue
a few days after posting this report. It had something to do with a
dirty filesystem; possibly the UEFI system partition or either of the
Windows-related partition. I ran a few fscks/chkdsks and attempted the
install again, and
I purchased Majesty Gold Edition 2012-10-17, and still am getting the
"not available for your Ubuntu version" message, after a couple of
software-center upgrades. My current version is 5.4.1.3. For something
that was a committed bug, this is getting a bit irritating. I only want
the game I purchase

and is a duplicate of bug #1050023, so is being marked as such.
If the user has set "Automatically check for updates" to Never, then I
think that should be respected. "Opting-out" using the Stop button isn't
ideal because the user could be charged for data downloaded before they
were able to click the button.

I wanted to add that this is not specific to unity/compiz, I can
reproduce the equivalent bug in cinnamon/muffin.
I have no idea how, but I think this really should be fixed.

I had the same problem having a over 500 files on a smaba share
(samba4). No problems accessing it with my desktop running 12.04 (samba3
client) but kept hanging (with no crash as per bug description) on my
laptop running 12.10 (samba3 client).
I have since installed fusesmb and the problem seems
