problems only seem to happen when my laptop is running on battery power,
not when it's connected to an external power source. On top of the
crashes I'm also unable to shut down when on battery power. I have to

There is a misleading description in Adobe Flash plugin in Software
Center. It says "Installer for the Adobe Flash plugin for Mozilla",
however, if you click more info, description states that plugin will
work on multiple browsers as well.
