It sounds like my problem can be divided into two parts.
1. not recognized as CDMA2000 1x modem.
2. even if it has been recognized properly, I still cannot connect with it.
1st part seems resolved by 0.6.0.0.really-0ubuntu2 inclu

All other webapps work, tried switching back to the old interface - no
effect. Perhaps this is due to the different URL (retro.grooveshark.com)
- very annoying as it was my favorite WebApp.

I found a way to walk around this. I turned off
undirect_fullscreen_windows in ccsm in composite tab. When it was on
(don't know what is default) fullscreen dosbox was broken, now it is
working fine again.

On the 'Do you want to start the upgrade?' window, when I hit the
'arrow' for details the window is re-drawn, but too tall for my screen.
This means I no longer have access to the 'Cancel' and 'Start Upgrade'
buttons to proceed. Since this window also lacks the window control

You don't have to do it from a livecd, and yes, after that you can just
run sudo update-grub and it should work properly.

The issue exists for me in Fedora 17, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 12.10,
OpenSUSE 12.2, Debian 7, Linux Mint, LMDE, you get it. It's not a
distrobution specific problem. I've tried many different APCI parameters
in the grub menu and none of them have worked. I'm using Sandy Bridge
graphics in an HP 2000 n

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

ALSO ALt-SysReq REISUB does not respond ever. The only way to recover
from these failure boots is to power cycle.
