Although the 10.04 liveUSB problems continues, I discovered that I created a
liveCD 11.10 on my old HP laptop as well. What I discovered is that when I
boot 11.10 on my new ASUS laptop It works fine. I get sound, and I get wireless
internet connectivity!

Originally on 12.04 but upgraded to 12.10 to try and see if my issue
was resolved with newer CUPS so here is the relevant info for a failure

setup (printer + cable) working well on 11.04 but when I was forced to

The problem exists in the initramfs boot scripts. They do not fire
--assemble. To fix this, I removed the package hook and scripts and
replaced them with those provided in the debian package. The debian
scripts are much better and not sure why ubuntu does not use those by
default anyway.

If I open any image with eog (I tried several different .png and .svg
files), then click and drag with the left mouse button inside the
window, X immediately crashes and I get taken back to the login screen.
If no image file is open, nothing happens. The behaviour is the same
