I have not yet tested with an alternative monitor, but I tested kernel
v.3.7-rc2-quantal and the problem continues.

This is a big problem in Quantal because the ATI driver doesn't support
the new kernel as well as it causing the display to "rollback" leading
to the "gnome classic" look. The audio also doesn't work (for me) with
the driver installed. Not sure if the same happens Unity.

- happens only when on battery and
- when my laptop resumes from standby. So first boot on battery (or AC) it

No, I've not uninstalled VirtualBox, I'll do what you suggest, just
please confirm if what I'm going to do is OK:
- Unistall VirtualBox
- Uninstall the v3.7-rc2-quantal kernel that I've just installed
- Reboot
- Reinstall the v3.7-rc2-quantal kernel
- Reboot

This problem appeared after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10.
Steps to reproduce:
- Open a video in Totem or in VLC
- Activate the dash
The part of the dash which overlaps the video is flickering (repeatedly
becoming fully transparent for a fraction of a second). It doesn't matter

Here is the dmesg.txt. However, there's no line containing "hash
matches" in it as described on the wiki page. The problem didn't occur
this time either.
Haven't tried uninstalling Bumblebee yet, but it's hard to test anyways
since the problem occurs only from time to time.

I'm experiencing this bug even when I confirm the tor service is stopped
(either through `service tor status` or `service tor stop`), so it looks
like this may not be the issue.
What's more, running `/usr/sbin/tor` from the command line *does* start
tor.
