I have the same issue. Sometimes the menu would not show up at all,
sometimes it would show up but any selection would be completely
unresponsive. The workaround was to run "sudo apt-get remove
libreoffice-gtk". I don't get the Unity menu anymore, but at least I can
get work done.

The workaround in post #7 no longer seems to work for my Ubuntu 12.04
x86_64 system, as of thunderbird package version 11.0.1+build1-0ubuntu2.
After upgrade, thunderbird immediately jumps to a Mozilla bug reporting
screen on start. I've ran this command as suggested:

Determined that the cause was that the kernel hadn't loaded the xfs module.
While this is understandable behavior in retrospect, it is still extremely
