I was having the same issue for a couple weeks till I did a search and found
this forum.
All I did to fix was type in ... LANG=en_US.UTF-8 into a terminal as root
exactly the way it is and this problem goes away.

As reported, I could connect yesterday evening with the new kernel
(v3.5.0-18); it was a bit slow (I don't know if this is related to this
bug) and a few pages failed to reload, but I was able to solve it simply
by refreshing them.
Today, however, the problem reappeared. I confirm that kernel v3.2
I have read the apport-collect logs for ubiquity, but could not see any
obvious problem there. May be someone with more experience can recognize
more, but for now I would say, with respect to the trace in
WifiSyslog.txt

Same problem here (12.10 64Bit).
Restarting lightdm didn't work for me. All I got was this black screen
with a blinking cursor. To get to a working desktop anyway, I
(temporarily) switched to gdm by doing:
1. [alt+f1]
2. $ sudo apt-get install gdm
3. restart machine. when gdm loginscreen comes up

It turns out I needed to install gnome-control-center-signon. Since
this is the only way to configure accounts for empathy, perhaps that
should be one of empathy's dependencies?

SysRq magic keys to reboot the computer. It happens about half of the
times for me when I leave my computer and come back after an hour.

As you can see there is a out of memory problem.
Primary this is worksform. Please set the memory of the virtual machine
to a better level than the defaults in VB(they are much to low in most
cases -> known marketing of the VB team).
Second, this is properly a VB problem than to the linux kernel
add the package name
