The final 12.10 release was yesterday, and this is still broken. I'm not
even sure where to report this any more; Launchpad is evidently the

Unfortunately the Quantal 3.5.0-15 kernel is unusable on my machine.

Seemes that an old installation had blacklisted nvidia-updates module from
loading.
After removing the blacklist from /etc/modprobe.d the nvidia driver
started working again.
