After a lot of digging into the various involved components including
some "stracing" I found out why it didn't work and how to fix this:
It seems the default applications are found via .desktop files in
/home//.local/share/applications. I had some older entries in
there, probably from Ubuntu edit
I got the same bug with Ubuntu 12.04: menu->applications->accessories -> crash.
Actually every place that listed applications: if you scrolled past gedit, e17
crashed.
I've worked around it by de-installing gedit and gedit-common. Now it doesn't
crash.
If I am correct it was a bad list handling
Since I test every tutorial I write and I've used it personally and I
have a fully working Wine after that, could you check twice before
saying my instructions don't work?

Sorry, another update. Although update-grub does detect Arch when the
partition is mounted, it sets the wrong UUID for the root partition in
the 'root=' parameter on the 'linux' (kernel) line. I don't know why it
does this, as it sets the right UUID for the partition everywhere else,

Keeps crashing constantly, I've removed the chromium's cache and config

I also had to mv /usr/share/applications/xdiagnose.desktop out of the way.
I am not really sure what triggers it.
If I put that file in ~/.local/share/applications/
and then try to add that to my favorites, it crashes again.
It's not the .svg file, since I made a launcher with that icon.

I got this problem in 12.04(64bit). Gnome shell installed from repo's. Have
reported it via 'press button to report' but would love to know if anyone has
any ideas as to what is is or how to patch it.

FYI was having exactly same problem (hang at startup, ESource* error
messages), also solved by uninstalling thunderbird-couchdb pkg.

random freeze. Sometimes the boot run normal, and sometimes the screen
freeze in purple. When it works, the boot run entirely in a purple
