I've commited this patch to master (what will be 0.22) and not to 0.20
since it breaks the public glib api
I'm closing this bug since it fixes the original reported issue. If
there are issues not fixed by this bug please open a new one, big bugs
get difficult to keep track of otherwise.

The problem is that the old way that Qt had to tell Gtk not to use the
overlay scrollbars (ubuntu_gtk_set_use_overlay_scrollbar) is now
basically a noop since the new overlay-scrollbar hijacks the scrollbars
at a different level (does not use os_scrollbar_new as it used to use).

The fwknop package can benefit greatly from upstart supervision.
First of it is generally deployed as a single point of failure with the side
effect that a failing fwknopd will probably leave the machine unmanageable by
eg. ssh. Second, the current 2.x release is fairly new
Ok.. I copied libcairo.so.2 (version 1.10.2) from an ubuntu 12.04
machine along with the required libpoppler.so.19 and libpoppler-
glib.so.8.
When Inkscape uses the old cairo version, the exported PDF files work
flawlessly with Xelatex.

A bit more information that may help - I have similar problems to some
extent.
For me they came as increasingly bizarre grub.cfg entries such as Colin quoted,
