I am not sure why this is happening. I tried to install on a USB hard
drive but while my system is supposed to boot from USB as well and it
installed successfully on that drive it would not boot at all! So I
formatted one of my good IDE drives but so far completely unsuccessful!

With a fresh 12.04.1 install + post-release version of fglrx this bug
affects me as well. I haven't tried the workaround/solution posted by
htrex yet, but I assume that these problems should not be tolerated on
an LTS that has been released for months now
