This can be closed. I was plugging in speakers to a jack that was not
working at the front of the cpu. Once I connected with output in rear,
audio is working fine.

Thunar apparently still has the same issue (on Precise), but Nautilus on
Precise doesn't, although on 12.10 beta it (Nautlilus) does. Apparently,

it seems that before the fix, enabling the bicubic filter plugin wasn't
affecting the unity launcher. Unity should respond to this plugin too. I
