Un-duping because, at least here, on 12.04 an edge binding conflict,
real or not, does not cause all user set edge bindings to fail on a
restart.
So this seems specific to 12.10 (at least here), & is not a 'sometimes'
thing. All user set edge bindings except top & bottom will cause the
failure
I get the same reaction. The only way to start vlc without this is to
right click a movie. It will do it momentarily until the movie begins.
Then it works perfectly.

64-bit. Seems like your system doesn't handle multiarch well, and as
such, you need different binaries for 32-bit and 64-bit (which is the
recommended procedure)
