there that could shed some light on it.

Andreas, I like Unity. I think it is slower that gnome 2 + compiz but
change is good once in a while and there is no room for innovation
unless we change things. I have also used compiz since the beryl/compiz
split and I really love it. By the way, you can move windows between
desktops with Ctrl-Al
es2_info and es2gears both give me software rendering.
Also, there seems to be something wrong with video overlays, the Y
apears to be offset from the UV vertically by maybe 4 pixels...

Just an update on the behavior of this bug.
About a week ago, there was an update installed by Update Manager that
resolved (for me) the issue of Unity crashing. The problem with the
screen resolution spontaneously changing was still present, but at least
it was usable.

Indeed, I have just tried the 295.49 driver from nvidia, removing
everything nvidia from ubuntu previously and I still got the freeze.
I also installed latest oneiric kernel with the same result to see if I
get lucky as @yorgasor and still got the total freeze.

So recreate, do the following:
Download the 64bit Ubuntu 10.04.4 desktop iso
Burn to CD or boot from USB
After installation do the following
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude full-upgrade
