On a fresh install of 12.04 64 bits with two users, if i choose a
default wallpaper in the list or if i choose an independant wallpaper,
lightdm loop on the next boot. When i encode my password twice, the
connexion loops too and the session refuse to start. Next boot, the bug
disapears. It
I found a workaround:
in the folder /home/your_home_name/.config
delete alien-arena folder (or symlink)
create a folder and name it alien-arena
launch alien-arena
It works!

My /etc/shadow belonged to root:root
After changing ownershop to root:shadow, login works again.
