Happened to me too in the following situation:
I checked the gnome-power-statistics when the battery was fully charged, and it
was blank.
I unplugged the netbook, and at first it was still blank, but after some
minutes of discharging the application displayed correctly when I reopened it.

I opened bug #991004 to have the compat package in Ubuntu. Then
installed it manually as described there. Now I have:
$ ldd /usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch

libusb-0.1.so.4 => /usr/local/lib/libusb-0.1.so.4 (0xb7742000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-
Plugging it into a USB 2.0 port still works with the compat lib:
