I run precise now, and there the issue has never occurred anymore. I
have no means at the moment to test the Maverick version with Kernel
upgrades. For all i know, it has been resolved with newer kernels
because since new versions of Ubuntu I haven't got this error anymore.

I still have this problem with Lubuntu running on my 32-bit machines,
and it is getting close to the release date of 12.04. If it is this

The file /etc/sudoers contains a line
"import /etc/sudoers.d/*" (or similar)
When invoking visudo to update the sudoers file, visudo only checks the sudoers

end, "apt-get dist-upgrade" runs longer than normal. I think the dpkg

Sean Clarke's solution has WORKED!
What really worked was the following commands:
1. dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb
2. dpkg --configure -a
The 1st dpkg 'force' installs from archives without aptitude.
The 2nd dpkg does automatic configurations.
