I purged all ubuntu hplip packages and used the installer script (as mentioned
in the link above) from hplip to get version 3.12.4 - afterwards all the
missing Postscript printer drivers were available again.
It really seems to be an incompatibility of 3.12.2 with ubuntu 12.04.

4.1.12
I have just dissabled the network adaptor because I read somewhere that
it could be downloading loads of files and I wanted to rule that out
because I'm on a weak connection.

One another thing: it seems it's not always 1.00, now I can see that
load avg tops at 0.40 when being totally idle machine, etc. Again, this
machine can be accessed now directly (only via ssh), and I don't want to
reboot it remotely, but I can check it out later if this happened with
older kernels

~/bin/id, a private program of mine. No doubt the intention was to call

My solution was to overcome my own ignorance of how the system works.
All I needed to do was change my source.
