I can confirm this bug, but would like to add that it happens with other
"table displays", too (e.g. pgadmin3 sql query). Refreshing the table by
changing the zoom level (ctrl+mouse wheel up/down) fixes the display.

After many experiments we discovered that this "garbling" is due to
interference between the program accessing the serial port and mspdebug,
which is used to load programs. During the programming process of the
msp430 we can see a warning message from mspdebug indicating:

this is such an odd idea, since there's already an option for auto
locking in "system settings-screen", why not use it, isn't it reasonable
to assume someone who wants auto locking would prefer it to happen

instead.
- I disabled the auto hide launcher behavior (in Unity 2D)
- Used the Ubuntu Tweak tool to enable transprent menus
- rebooted
- Logged in Unity 3D
- Desktop takes a while to be rendered

Deleting all my bookmarks cleared this up for me. Thanks for the
workaround!
I really only had maybe like 50 bookmarks, maybe less. I feel like I
hit the delete key about 30 times, perhaps.

I've updated the patch as the upstream margin patch has been removed.
I've also tested Gnome Classic & Compiz and not detected any issues for
the desktop icon workspace.
At current, Unity settings of those margins is done in the Unity plugin
which is to late, i.e those margins must be set one of
