when I hand my snazzy Ubuntu laptop to someone who's only used Windows

On my system with Elantech touchpad, there sometimes is trouble with
detecting motion events. For example, if I scroll through a menu with
the pointer, the menu items are not hilighted as they should be, and the
overlay scrollbar does not work correctly.
Curiously, attaching a USB mouse fixes this
Has there been any progress on getting this fix out? I'm asking because
it *is* a security issue, and there hasn't been any reported progress
for almost 3 months. This vulnerability is showing up in a PCI
compliance scan for one of my servers running Lucid.

I am having a very similar problem on Arch Linux: Since upgrading xorg-
intel driver from 2.7 to 2.8, the X server does not start when an
external monitor is connected to my laptop, and some segfault message
appears in Xorg.0.log. Downgrading to 2.7 again "solved" the issue.
