I used LiveCD. I marked the partition with my old / to format and mount as '/'
(so the old system was really completely wiped out byt the mkfs). In the same
dialog I marked my home partition to mount as /home and _do not_ format.

This particular issue dissapeared. Now the notebook does not have any
borders, but that's another bug.

changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed
As asked before: It would help us a lot if you could test it on a
currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an
issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect 326216
and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Sometimes, (I have yet to figure out when!)
USB headsets and mics which are analog only show up with a digital profile as
well. While this is probably not a 12.04 regression, with the revamp of the
sound settings UI this becomes annoying, as seen in the attached screenshot.

Can fix by downloading jnlp file
Right click on file and change properties such that it is opened with Sun Java
Webstart rather than a Browser (not sure whether I set that at some stage or
whether it was set automatically)
