It looks to me like it is just timing out trying to read the meta
release file and because this is from Oneiric it would be the
development one.

Before going to bed, open a terminal and "killall -9 nm-applet" (your computer
will stay connected to the network)
When you next need to switch networks: "nm-applet &"

Chrome/Chromium isn't installed by default on Ubuntu, however Firefox is.
So adding a Firefox icon would give a better out-of-the-box exper
gnome-globalmenu could display menus from both user and suid
applications.
unfortunately it only worked with gtk applications, but maybe there's
something in the code that could be applied to indicator-appmenu.
